A Tapestry of Time: Unravelling Danesfield House's Illustrious Past
Within the embrace of Danesfield House's sprawling estate lies a tapestry woven over millennia. Over 4,000 years ago, nomadic tribes sought refuge on this very land, pausing amidst their hunts and fishing expeditions along the untamed river. Today, if you stand atop the crest between the present house and the river, you can still catch a glimpse of the steep ravine, remnants of a prehistoric fortification. It was here that the Danish adventurers made their encampment, bestowing upon the estate its enduring name, Danesfield.
The estate's recorded history emerges in 1664 when Edmund and Margaret Medlycott became the proud owners, erecting the first property known as "Medlycotts." Yet, little is known of this family, their presence fading into obscurity within the annals of local records. It wasn't until 1725, when James Medlycott rented "Medlycotts" to Mrs. Morton and her son John, that the transformation of Danesfield House truly began. John Morton, Barrister and Attorney General to Queen Charlotte, purchased the estate in 1750, undertaking a grand reconstruction and christening the newly built house Danesfield.
The house passed through various hands, each leaving their mark on its legacy. Robert Scott-Murray, inheritor of a commercial fortune, erected a spacious Georgian-style building in place of its predecessor. Charles Robert Scott-Murray, his nephew, and a prominent figure in Parliament, brought his Catholic faith to the forefront, constructing a Roman Catholic Church in Marlow and a private chapel within Danesfield's grounds. The estate continued to change hands until it found its way into the possession of Robert William Hudson, who built a new mansion in 1901, replacing the old house and chapel.
Throughout its storied past, Danesfield House weathered financial difficulties and periods of neglect. Yet, each owner left their indelible mark on the estate, shaping it into the magnificent haven it is today. From the property speculator, Mr. Hossack, to the formidable Mrs. Arthur Hornby Lewis, and later Mr. Stanley Garton, Danesfield House's fate hung in the balance, its allure persevering against the trials of time.
As you explore the meticulously restored gardens and 65 acres of parkland surrounding the house, you are transported to a realm of ethereal beauty. Hornbeam-lined paths guide you towards the impressive Clock Tower, setting the stage for the botanical marvels that lie ahead. Delicate and rare plantings grace the landscape, harmoniously coexisting amidst the splendour. Marvel at the skilfully pruned Wisteria adorning the house, its cascading purple blooms offering a spectacle during May and June. Stepping onto the terrace, formal gardens beckon, adorned with towering Yew topiaries and fragrant English and French Lavender varieties. The centrepiece—a three-tier fountain, presided over by a cherubic figure atop an oyster shell—enchants all who behold it.
Stroll past two original waterfalls, crafted from Pulhamite rock, a testament to the artistry of James Pulham and Sons. Their creations, including stone walls, benches, and terracotta objects, embellish the landscape, lending an air of grandeur to the surroundings. Allow your gaze to wander towards the Corsican Pine, an unexpected addition to this verdant oasis. Further into the gardens, discover the tranquillity of the formal Italian garden, graced by meticulously manicured box topiaries and the soothing presence of a Koi fishpond, watched over by two majestic Acers. And should you spot perfectly cut lines along the Yew hedges, know that they bear witness to the nibbles of local Muntjac and Fallow deer, savouring the delicacies within their reach.
Danesfield House is more than a luxurious country retreat; it is a portal to history, an invitation to immerse yourself in the passage of time.
