Last evening, I attended an impactful event at the Nexus Club in London, hosted by Bufarma and led by Kiera Chaplin, granddaughter of the iconic Charlie Chaplin. As an ambassador for both Bufarma and the Desert Flower Foundation (DFF), Kiera assembled a dedicated group of advocates and philanthropists to address one of today’s most pressing but often overlooked issues: female genital mutilation (FGM).
The dinner was far more than a networking opportunity—it was an educational gathering focused on raising awareness and support for the Desert Flower Foundation's mission. With over 230 million girls and women worldwide affected by FGM, the practice persists in more than 30 countries, particularly across Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia. This practice, primarily inflicted on young girls under the age of 15, leaves deep and lasting physical and psychological scars.
FGM is recognised globally as a severe violation of human rights, with profound effects on the health and well-being of those who endure it. Physically, survivors face immediate consequences, such as excruciating pain, infection, and even risk of death. The long-term health impacts can include severe urinary and menstrual complications, chronic pain, sexual dysfunction, obstetric complications, and enduring psychological trauma. The economic toll is staggering, with treatment costs estimated at $1.4 billion each year globally. This issue is not only distant; it affects thousands of women and girls in the UK, where approximately 137,000 women have already undergone FGM, and 60,000 girls remain at risk.
Kiera Chaplin’s role with DFF has been instrumental in amplifying these voices. Her dedication to ending FGM is evident in her work establishing schools with DFF, providing safe educational environments for young girls in at-risk regions. Through these initiatives, DFF aims to create lasting change and protect future generations from this harmful practice. Kiera’s speech was a moving call to action, encouraging attendees not only to donate but to champion this cause within their own communities, thus spreading awareness to new circles of influence.
Rob McLeod, CEO of Bufarma, also took to the stage to thank attendees for their support and reinforce his company's commitment to socially responsible causes like the Desert Flower Foundation. Bufarma, known for its innovative pharmaceutical solutions, is dedicated to improving health and wellness across communities and is proud to stand behind DFF in their fight to end FGM.
Both Bufarma and DFF emphasised the importance of community engagement and international support in combating FGM and empowering vulnerable girls. For those who wish to learn more or contribute to the cause, the websites for both organisations offer valuable resources and opportunities to support this mission:

Kiera Chaplin’s words left a lasting impression on the audience, as she reminded everyone of the power of each voice, each contribution, and each effort in the fight against FGM. The evening was a compelling reminder of our collective responsibility to protect and empower girls worldwide, and to support the DFF’s mission of building a future free from violence, filled with opportunity.
The night concluded with a renewed sense of purpose among all present, serving not only as a celebration of the Desert Flower Foundation’s achievements but also as a powerful call to action for everyone to join the fight. Together, through awareness, advocacy, and support, we can make a world where every girl can grow up safe, healthy, and empowered.
